In many sunbelt and midwestern cities car ownership is so pervasive that denizens never consider other modes of transportation. This leads to heavy traffic, obesity, a higher rate of car accidents and a less coherent urban fabric. Such places probably won't ever have the multimodal culture of cities like New York or Amsterdam, but exposure to other ways of experiencing the city might lead to different transportation choices in the future.

Apropos of that, I designed a platform for user generated, augmented reality GPS based games. Using a simple set of tools, users can create tours, treasure hunts and geographic puzzles for others to play. The creation tools are open-ended enough to generate games that are as simple as a race from point A to point B to a Dungeons & Dragons-esque experience. New content is always being added, so there’s always somewhere new to explore in the city.

Can cheap apartments foster a sense of identity and belonging? Can one experience novelty and affordability at the same time? I imagined a community focused, pedestrian centric complex on the site of Oak Pointe Apartments, about a quarter mile from the Candler Park MARTA station. I attempted to mimic the accidental dynamism of Italian hill town streets while regularizing building footprints. This method encourages neighbor interactions and explorations while enveloping the site in a semi permeable membrane that interacts with the neighborhood while providing privacy and shelter within.

Mixed Messages

A mixed use building is often imagined as having storefronts at street level with residential above it. But with modular housing this typology could become much more flexible. In this project I sought to imagine what a building that incorporates single family, apartment, and retail uses might look like in a modular world.

A poster series designed to inform Atlantans about the shortcomings of car culture.

Once you realize how crazy car culture is, it's hard to go back.
