Line of Sight

This project uses ArcMap to examine the effect of station intervisibility on Citibike ridership. Do Citibike stations that fall within the viewshed of subway stations see greater ridership than those that do not? What implications might this have on the character of multimodal transportation in New York City?

Building Sovereign Systems is the result of the Advanced V Joint Architecture & Planning studio at Columbia GSAPP (2020). Centered on the municipality of Culebra, Puerto Rico, the project enhances Culebran independence and self-sufficiency from mainland PR as the island challenges the historic and economic legacies of colonialism as well as the exacerbated hurricane risk brought on by global warming.

Communities often feel that they must make a choice between new amenities, public investment, and gentrification. Pedestrian plazas, street trees, bike lanes, and subway station improvements, are all commonly understood as catalysts in the gentrification process. Do alterations to the built environment, specifically new public amenities within a neighborhood, such as bike lanes, pedestrian plazas, and street tree plantings, contribute to displacement vulnerability in communities that are susceptible to gentrification?

The Effects of App Reporting on 311 Parking Complaints

In 2014, software developers Josh Weizman and Jeff Novich launched Reported, an app that enables users to report driver infractions directly to NYC’s 311 service. Pedestrians or cyclists that encounter an obstructed bike lane or sidewalk can submit a complaint in minutes, enabling enforcement measures to be taken. This project examines the impact of the app on parking-related 311 complaints as well as the degree of subsequent enforcement of parking laws.

Replication Dynamic

Can cheap apartments foster a sense of identity and belonging? Can one experience novelty and affordability at the same time? I imagined a community focused, pedestrian centric complex on the site of Oak Pointe Apartments, about a quarter mile from the Candler Park MARTA station. I attempted to mimic the accidental dynamism of Italian hill town streets while regularizing building footprints. This method encourages neighbor interactions and explorations while enveloping the site in a semi permeable membrane that interacts with the neighborhood while providing privacy and shelter within.
